The theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) was created
by Dr. Howard Gardner. After many years working as a cognitive
psychologist, Gardner concluded that "IQ", as is typically
assessed, is too limiting. In his groundbreaking book, Frames
of Mind, Gardner contends that standard IQ tests do not assess
the full range and depth of human intelligence.
Dr. Gardner's work is the springboard for our rigorous
and challenging curriculum here at the Hopkinton Independent
School. We put MI to work in a variety of ways: conducting learning
style assessments, observing students, being aware of individual
learning styles and identifying individual student strengths,
talents and academic leanings. We integrate our curriculum through
cross disciplinary lessons and projects that expose and challenge
students in visual and performing arts, in music, math, science
and languages. Academic work is also enhanced through on-going
opportunities for physical, social, emotional, naturalistic growth.
Not only does an MI methodology enhance learning, it enhances
students' love of learning.
